At 3.30 pm we head off for our afternoon game drive and endure more African massage. It takes 30 minutes before we enter the Buffalo Springs Game reserve. The roads/tracks in the reserve are even more bumpy then we have experienced so far, the terrain is also more open. We come across the usual impala, warthogs and elephants, but then we see the reticulated giraffes. They are striking and their different patterns to the other giraffe species is clearly evident. Then we come across a grevy zebra different in that their stripes are narrower with bigger ears.
As we proceed further see water buck, Jackals, antelopes and gazelles. Our driver notices a jeep off road and in the bush. We go in to take a look and we have a leopard perched in the tree. Amazing! We stay for 30 minutes or more and while it moves it does not come down. Word spreads quickly and by the time we leave there have been at least 8 other vehicles crowded in and watching. We have now ticked off the Big Five.
We continue on and notice vultures perched in a tree, a sure sign there is a carcass nearby and lions must be present if the vultures are still in the trees. Sure enough we find a giraffe carcass that has had its insides removed. We slowly drive around but cannot find them. They are well hidden sleepIng after filling their bellies.
It is getting late and we head back to camp. At dinner, which was ordinary, we compare steps. Ross who was in the back had over 20000 steps, I was in the middle and I had 14500 steps!
It turned out to be an amazing day. Another early start tomorrow.
