Saroyan Shaba Lodge

 Sunday April 12

Beautiful sunny morning with a lovely view of Mt Kenya. It was cold last night but we had hot water bottles in our bed which were great!

Leave just after 8 and face 30 to 49 minutes of African massage! After about an hour we drop for a visit/demonstration of a spinners and weavers cooperative. As it is a Sunday only a few women are available as the rest are at church. Kenya is very Christian having been converted by missionaries from all Christian denominations. Small churches are everywhere with various titles and messages. On our way we see a lot of women and children in their Sunday best heading to church. After about an hour at the s& w we recommence our journey to My Kenya. The demonstration was interesting in that they use traditional wooden machines and all hand operated.

As we pass through various towns, it is quiet because of it being a Sunday, but later on it starts to get busy. We have the interminable rumble strips and speed humps. While it was cool this morning it is starting to get warm. By 11.15 we are almost there, but the last 10 km is over unmade dirt roads extremely rutted and with pot holes. The landscape has also changed from lush green areas to an arid landscape with acacia trees everywhere. We arrive at our lodge which has a river flowing past it with very sandy banks. The room has no aircon but does have a fan. It is nowhere as good as last night’s accommodation. After lunch we have a game drive from 3.30 pm.
